After attending last night's MAPS Board meeting I left feeling sad and depressed after seeing the concerted and pointed effort by those wanting to get rid of the Redmen nickname.

It appeared most in opposition were NMU faculty and students in the Native American studies who never attended MAPS as students or know the culture of MSHS.

Whenever the term Redmen was used it was termed racist by this faction.

About 60 people addressed the Board Monday night. Those in favor of retaining the Redmen name brought up several interesting points:

1. There are about five (unnamed) teachers  at MSHS who are calling students who are in favor of retaining the Redmen name, racists, according to their parents who spoke.

2. No reason has been given to the public as to why all team and individual sports records listed on the gym walls have been removed and destroyed.

3. Those in opposition dismiss anyone who says Redmen stands for courage, strenght and power,

Those for change suggested the name be changed to the Marquette Mariners to provide a good gender neutral name and depict the area from where the school is from while halting the current recist name.

That's what is going on in Marquette. I can't wait until this group goes after the teams in Ishpeming and Negaunee for their nicknames.

I ALSO FEEL SAD. THAT EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD TODAY HAS TO HAVE AN UNDER TONE OF RACIST. IF THEY CHANGE THE NAME TO MAINERS WILL SOMEONE WANT THAT CHANGED TO SOMTHING ELSE BECAUSE MAYBE THE MAINERS DURING THE OLD TIMES POLLUTED LAKE SUPERIOR. I THINK IF WE HAVE ANY LAWERS IN OUR CLASS OR THE CLASSES BEFORE AND AFTER SHOULD DO A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST  THE PARTIES INVOLVED IN REMOVAL OF OUR SPORT HERITAGE. WHO RUNS THAT MEETING YOU WERE AT. I NEAVER HEARD OF THAT GROUP.

I'm also sorry to hear about the Redmen controversy.  I'm so sick of people playing the racist card.  I think being a mascot for a team should be an honor.  I'm surprised that this didn't take place sooner.

I haven't given this response much thought but I wonder what will happen to my diploma. Are my accomplishments in High School going to be erased to because I was a Redman?

I,m not at all happy with the cowards buckling under to a buch of candy assed whiny dip sh#ts! The Marquette Redmen stand for bravery, perseverance, pride, honesty and integrity.

I have a cap made to show MY pride in the fact that "We are REDMEN from MSHS 1965"!!!!

I will post a picture of it and me when I pick it up tomorrow.

Just to make it clear it was the first regular meeting of the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education for 2020 where this took place. The school board had appointed a committee to review the Redmen nickname and had unanimously voted to accept the committee's recomendation to change the name at a previous meeting. Due to the outpouring of comments by the people of Marquette the meeting was held in Kaufman auditorium to hold everyone. The board meeting before at the little theater in the high school had such an over flow that this last meeting was moved to Kaufman. The Mining Journal last night had an editorial that everyone involved in the discussion should remain civil.

I'm in the same fix.  I have a t-shirt from the all school/all year reunion that they were selling with the redman head on the front and the UP with all the tribes and on the back is 'Our proud Culture and Heritage!  WE WILL NOT GIVE UP!'. Got it to my Facebook page but can't get it further.  LOL

Thanks, Pat. That is the picture. The Indian head is from Marquette embroidery. They refused to put any lettering on it. I went to Embroidery Wearhouse and they put the lettering on for me. The front has MSHS 1965 and the sides  have Redmen. I have been wearing that hat all over and will continue to wear it proudly!

Bob - want my t-shirt to go with it?  laugh

01/12/20 09:14 PM #1988

Robert Lambert

If I wore "t" shirts I would accept, Karen, but, thanks for the offer. I don't think i've worn a "t" shirt since high school. lol

As a matter of fact I don't even wear long sleeve shirts anymore.

If anyone wants a hat I'll find out the cost and let you know. Just send me an E-mail: rblam516@charter.net

Since I got my new tractor  if I want to use it I have to get out while my son is working. Nice not having to shovel or get out in a storm to clean up the driveways on the block. lol

Hi All!  Geez...I, too, am disappointed & somewhat angry about the Redmen controversy...although not surprised..it's been in the making for quite a while. It is utterly ridiculous...we've had it forever & ought to be allowed to keep it. If a class action suit is necessary...then so be it.

Pat Nevala, We are in California until Spring. Will you send me your address? I forgot to bring it from home & I want to send you a check for our class.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Bob Lambert....So glad you got that tractor! That'll be a lot easier on your back & heart. I'm sure you're enjoying it.

Yes, Sandie, I do enjoy it. I just finished four driveways and am now "taking a break". I even sold my snowblower, since I haven't run it since I bought the loader. No more snow in the face. Lol

Skip saw my hat and went to Embroidery Wearhouse (next to the Villa) and ordered one yesterday.

Another meeting at Kaufman auditorium monday at 7:00 pm. I may not make it as I have a prior commitment.

Happy Birthday to Skip!  I think it is tomorrow the 26th.  Sure wish I wasn't hearing about and reading about the Redmen controversy.  It is all so unnecessary.  I would like to know why all the atheletic records were removed. Who had the authority to do that?

01/25/20 08:35 PM #1992

Sandie Hanson (Laine)

A great big Happy Birthday hug for Skip...have a super day!

Bob Lambert: I may pick up one of those hats when I get back home. I have a very old red school Tshirt. I don't remember exactly what's on it, but will drag it out & have a look....when I get home.

Please keep us posted on the Redmen issue, huh?  Happy plowing guy!  I am sooo glad we were able to head south this winter. Paul is fishing almost every day. We are using the heated pool & jacuzzi. I am riding my bike & kayaking in the beautiful Colorado river....cussing at a few inconsiderate speedboaters. This RV park has all the lemons, oranges, grapefruit, tangelos,& pomegranates we can eat...have even mailed some home to the Kids. Life is good. I hope it is good for my fellow classmates as well!

Happy Birthday Skip...hope your day is filled with joy!

Heading for Florida in a few weeks and can't wait.  Although our winters are usually mild and rainey, with a few heavy snows, the thought of sunshine and short sleeves in constantly putting goose bumps on my arms.

Hope the controversy concerning the Redman logo becomes a thing of the past.  It's not racial, it's not bigotry, it's not horrific, for pete's sake.  It's a picture - usually of a proud figure - that embrases the dignity and strength of our native Americans.  It doesn't demean the proud culture of our indiginous peoples.  It elevates that culture to a level of recognition and strength.

Hope all are well.

Chuck

To answer the removal of the records question...the record removal has nothing to do with the Redmen controversy, the records had not been updated in a long time, a previous athletic director began the process and was offered a job elsewhere, the job has changed hands a couple of times. There will be an update to the records at some time. As for the Redmen controversy many of us feel keeping the redman name is showing pride etc. but the Chief and many of his people don't share our thoughts. So the decision to keep or change is a difficult one for the board and administration. They are in a no win situation. There are two sides that feel very strong about what they believe.
